Malacañang officials extended their congratulations to Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao following his technical knockout victory over Oscar “Golden Boy” de la Hoya at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

“His boxing fit is testament to the spirit of the Filipino. Pacquiao has proven once again…magaling ang Pinoy at bayani ang Pinoy,” deputy presidential spokesperson Lorelai Fajardo said in a statement.

Fajardo also commended Team Pacquiao for their collective effort to win the fight, saying that it is something worthy to be emulated in light of the global financial crisis.

“Our congratulations too to Team Pacquiao…we must as a nation work together as team Phillipines to face the challenges of the world economic downturn,” she said.

First Gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, meanwhile, announced that President Arroyo has already congratulated Pacquiao.

“Manny Pacquiao brought honor to our country. The President already talked to him and congratulated him in behalf of the Filipino people. We are all very proud of Manny Pacquiao. He made all Filipinos very proud of him. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!” he said.

Press Secretary Jesus Dureza, for his part, said that Pacquiao displayed “true Filipino grit and grace.”

“As the whole world watched in awe, once again Manny prevailed convincingly and in style…Manny indeed is making boxing history. While he was an underdog to bookies and matchmakers abroad, he was already a winner to all Filipinos. We are all truly proud of him,” he said.

Meanwhile, at the House of Representatives, Speaker Prospero Nograles also praised Pacquiao, who, according to him, “placed the republic on the map of the world.”

“It’s the guts and the heart of the Filipino boxer from Mindanao that did it. No retreat, no surrender, just fight fight fight for love of country and love of the game. It’s the honor of our country to have a national treasure like him. Am glad I came to give moral support and cheer. The stadium was clearly De La Hoya fans and they kept quiet after three rounds,” he said.

Pacquiao scored a spectacular TKO victory over a heavily outboxed de la Hoya in the eighth round of their highly anticipated “Dream Match”.

Prior to the stoppage, referee Tony Weeks warned de la Hoya that he will stop the fight if the Golden Boy continues to receive heavy blows from Pacquiao.

But before the ninth round bell tolled, de la Hoya’s corner stopped their fighter from continuing the bout, thus resulting in a TKO win.–With Dennis Gasgonia and Roy Medina,
