Doctors are in: Climate change a hazard to your health

Talk about service integration and taking that to the next level…

In Canada, doctors join the effort to address climate change. See story here

According to the article, the American Medical Association published its own version in 2011, and in 2009 the British Medical Journal called climate change “the biggest global health threat of the 21st century.”

What is most interesting to me is the ‘mainstreaming’ potential of the growing link that medicine and public health is making between climate change and human health. Those who have studied the reasons why an individual cares about the things s/he cares about, a reason that rises to the top is whether the social concern impacts personal health and well-being, and that of one’s family. A classic example of how this has been used in the past is in the tobacco control campaign on the 1990s, my first professional experience in community health, and by the way, in what I call ‘community-based practice” — public health interventions defined by communities themselves, as opposed to “evidence based practice.”
